Berit Smestad Paulsen
In her research, Professor Paulsen has been occupied with various aspects of natural products, both from terrestrial plants, lichen, algae (fresh and salt water) and fungi. A major thrust of her research has been related to the study of medicinal plants. This includes the traditional use of plants (ethnopharmacology), as well as their bioactive compound content and effects. The main focus has been on bioactive pectic substances from plants. More recently, her focus has been on medicinal plants from Mali and South Africa. Her ethnopharmacological and bioactivity studies have been focused on wound healing, malaria, schistosomiasis and diabetes.
