Organic / Synthetic Chemistry
Professor De Koning obtained his PhD at the University of Cape Town in 1988. After two postdoctorates at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Hawaii, he moved to the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa. He is currently professor of Organic Chemistry at this university. His research interests lie in the synthesis of nitrogen- and oxygen-containing heterocycles. In 2007, the journal Nature awarded him the Nature Mid-career Creative Mentoring Award, and in 2015, he received the inaugural Faculty of Science Supervisors Award.
