Policy and Support Actions for Southern African Natural Product Partnership

  • to develop an advanced web-based knowledge management system or a virtual environment for sharing research information by SABINA partners
  • to provide training on a range of topics including the management of indigenous knowledge systems, and the management of intellectual property rights - in the Southern African Development Community (SADC)
  • to support exchange visits between the SABINA network partners

  • to facilitate the development of policies.

Virtual Research Environment (VRE)

This digital workspace is home to a number of researchers concerned with African natural products, the enhancement of food security, and the improvement of human and animal health. It is a secure environment that facilitates the storing and sharing of research across the globe.

POL-SABINA is managed by the University of Pretoria via the African Centre for Gene Technologies (ACGT) which is also located in Pretoria, South Africa.

POL-SABINA is an African, Caribbean, and Pacific (ACP) Science & Technology Programme funded by the European Union (EU), and co-funded by the Carnegie Corporation New York and the Department of Science & Technology South Africa.

The Southern African Biochemistry and Informatics for Natural Products (SABINA) proactively implements post-graduate chemistry/biochemistry programmes, including bioinformatics as an essential tool for data management and the structure-function elucidation of natural products. Through these programmes SABINA develops and strengthens networks that integrate chemical and biological sciences in key Southern African Development Community (SADC) universities.

The Policy and Support Actions for Southern African Natural Product Partnership (POL-SABINA) links the SABINA network to policy makers, farmers, entrepreneurs. POL-SABINA provides training on various business topics, the management of intellectual property rights and indigenous knowledge systems, and facilitates policy development. POL-SABINA is also developing an advanced knowledge management system or virtual research environment (VRE).
