SIG Regional Initiative in Science and Education (Carnegie-RISE)
Regional Initiative in Science and Education (RISE) is one of the international Science Initiative Group's
(SIG) current projects. RISE focuses on the development of human capacity through science and
technology training and research, in a regional context in sub-Saharan Africa – capacity that contributes
to national and regional economic development.
Supported by a funding grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York, RISE prepares PhD and MSclevel
scientists and engineers in sub-Saharan Africa through university-based research and training
networks in selected disciplines. The SABINA Programme was selected in mid-2008 by an international
panel of distinguished scientists as one of the five RISE networks, following an intense competition that
attracted 48 proposals from 29 African countries.
The Carnegie Corporation of New York – through RISE – funds SABINA, and co-funds POLSABINA.
